TRICIA
CHÉRIE

I’m Tricia Chérie, a Virginia-based journalist, editor, and storyteller dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices and exploring impactful stories. In 2008, I founded No Apologies Magazine, a platform for “Writers Who Dare & Stories That Matter.” Initially a print magazine sold in record shops and college bookstores, it has since grown into a 90s-inspired self-assembled zine and an online hub featuring contributors from across the globe, from India to Istanbul.

My recent feature, “Off the Rails: Tino’s Bold Journey in Graffiti Art,” showcases the transformative work of a trans muralist redefining identity and reshaping urban landscapes in Utica, New York. This piece exemplifies my dedication to stories that inspire connection and broaden perspectives.

For over 16 years, I’ve contributed to publications in the places I’ve called home, from Hilton Head, South Carolina, to Radford, Virginia. Early in my career, I refined my investigative skills as a research assistant and intern for Wayne Barrett at The Village Voice, where I learned the value of persistence and the art of asking hard questions.

As Associate Music Editor for Washington, D.C.’s Meets Obsession Magazine, I explored music and culture, interviewing artists like Zoë Kravitz and reviewing various genres. At The Columbia Free Times, I focused my reporting on South Carolina’s vibrant arts and entertainment scene, covering events from fashion shows to ballet performances.

Recently, I’ve collaborated with PR Carnet World Magazine to develop global content strategies that balance depth with accessibility. At NYU’s The Click, I’ve reported on local and national issues while highlighting creative innovators like the team behind Richmond’s podcast, “Liner Notes.”

When I’m not reporting, editing, or pursuing graduate studies at NYU, I mentor aspiring journalists, sharing the guidance I received as a youth correspondent for The Free Lance-Star. At home in Stafford, Virginia, I spend my time sketching, writing poetry, singing, and reading. Nightly moonlit walks offer me space to reflect on life’s larger picture. I share this world with my husband, Cliff, and our two cats, Jilly and Vera, who ensure every day is filled with warmth, spontaneity, and a touch of chaos.

I am delighted to e-meet you!

Here are 5 Fun Facts About Me

  1. Trend Sleuth: I’m captivated by the constant cultural shifts and discussions unfolding on TikTok, YouTube, and Reddit. I love jumping down the metaphorical rabbit hole to uncover the stories and dynamics driving viral moments.
  2. Moonlight Walker: Nightly walks under the moonlight are my way of reflecting, recharging, and sometimes dreaming up my next big story or creative project.
  3. Powered by Playlists: Music is the heartbeat of my creative process. Whether it’s a haunting ballad or an adrenaline-pumping dub step, every piece I write carries the rhythm of the songs that inspired it.
  4. Stationery Aficionado: There’s nothing quite like the potential of a blank journal or the perfect pen to ignite creativity. My desk is always stocked with tools ready to bring ideas to life.
  5. Horror Movie Buff: I love a good horror movie, especially when it’s accompanied by a killer soundtrack or clever cinematography. The jump scares are just a bonus!

My introduction to journalism began in high school as a contributor to my local paper’s youth insert, It!

My first cover story, published during my senior year, explored prom dance etiquette and even featured my own artwork.
